Rising sign calculator
Your Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon where and when you were born. Enter your date, exact time and city to find it.
What your Rising sign means
The Rising sign is the face you show the world: your first impression, your style and how you approach new situations. It also sets the starting point of your chart, which is why it is the one placement you cannot find from the date alone.
Why it needs your birth time and place
The sky seems to rotate once a day, so a new sign crosses the eastern horizon about every two hours. Two people born the same day, a few hours apart, have different Rising signs. And because the horizon depends on where you stand, your birthplace matters too.
This calculator uses your local birth time, the time zone of your birthplace and its coordinates to find the sign on the horizon at that instant.
If you don't know your birth time
Look for it on your birth certificate or ask a family member. Without it, an exact Rising sign is not possible, and any tool that gives one from the date alone is guessing. Your Sun and Moon signs are still available in the birth chart calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Rising sign and Ascendant?
They are the same thing. Ascendant is the technical word, Rising sign the everyday one.
How exact does my birth time need to be?
Within about 15 minutes is usually enough, though if your time falls near the edge of two signs, a few minutes can change the result.
Can I find my Rising sign without my birth time?
Not exactly. The Rising sign changes about every two hours, so the date alone can't tell which one it was.
Does it matter which city I pick?
Yes. The same clock time gives a different Rising sign in different places, so pick the city where you were born, or the nearest large one.
